It is exciting to get to teach such an important class for the future leaders in the SPCFMC. I am working on a syllabus, but in the meantime, I would like to get the list of books out to you.
- ISBN-10: 0310517826 How to Read the Bible for all its Worth by Gordon Fee and Douglas Stewart.
- ISBN-10: 0830824782 IVP Bible Background Commentary on the New Testament by Craig S. Keener
- ISBN-10: 0830814191 IVP Bible Background Commentary on the Old Testament by John H. Walton, Victor Matthews, and Mark Chavalas
- ISBN-10: 0802841724 Women in the Church’s Ministry: A Test Case from Biblical Interpretation by R T France
I also would like to have some journal articles on Biblical interpretation regarding the issue of homosexuality.
The Students would NOT be required to read the IVP Background commentaries. This is an effort to equip them with a resource that will allow them to quickly research cultural issues on Scriptures that they encounter throughout their ministry.
The other items would be required reading (How to read the Bible for all it’s worth, Women in the Church’s Ministry, and the articles on Homosexuality). I am thinking about having the journal articles and Women in the Church’s ministry be reading that is due on the second class though (with the Fee and Stuart book reading due on the first day of class), so as to space things out a bit (of course they would do well to read all of it before the first class, but it wouldn’t be covered in detail until the second class)… I will get back to you on the specific journal articles on women in ministry and homosexuality. We will use these to illustrate and exegetical principles.
